Since 1979, we’ve developed retail product packaging that sells and adds value.

We design the famous retail packaging you see flying off store shelves. Our packaging design is now handled by award-winning graphic designer Tom Lien of Lien Design from San Diego, California. Below are samples of a range of his iconic designs that he has produced for companies across the world for over 17 years:

How Tom designs name brand Packaging Design that sells
It’s the same process for any other type of graphic design or packaging design we do.

Phase One

After discussing your market and many other aspects and details – Tom designs and shows you one or more pencil sketches or computer sketches of the package design, package label or logo.

Tom calls out various thoughts as handwritten notes on the side or in email for further discussion.

Once all agree the rough package design, label or logo design is approved and best it can be, then Tom starts Phase Two of the packaging or label or logo design process, transforming the approved design into a computer rendering.

In Phase One Tom is considering the very best way the package or logo design can sell your product to your intended consumer, and the best way the package or logo design can appeal to retail buyers.

Phase One can also include a competitive brand review to analyze competitors.

Phase Two

Based on the approved packaging design sketch…

…Tom creates a number of rough computer packaging design concept sketches as options to assess and choose from.

Each packaging design sketch option has its benefits and drawbacks.

At this stage you can test the design on friends, family, associates, potential consumers and retail buyers, or conduct a focus group. As a result Tom might refine the design at Tom’s normal rate..

At the end of this packaging design phase you choose a design for Tom to make final artwork.

Phase Three

The packaging design artwork prints perfectly.

Tom creates the final packaging design artwork with all the packaging design specs, you approve it, and Tom sends the approved package design artwork to your printer anywhere in the world.

If you wish, Tom can help you find or assess a great packaging design or label printer and get best package design or label design print prices.

We don’t do any printing yet if we help you follow through with a packaging printer you can be doubly assured of the finest outcome in every way.

In the end you get a brand name result.
For any time not included in the phases above, Tom’s normal rate applies for consultation, changes, alterations, resizing or revisions.

To pre-sell your packaging Tom can create a very real 3D image of the packaging before the packaging is printed that you can use on websites, in promotion and marketing.

When Tom completes Phase Three ask for a 3D package design mock-up form the packaging design art. The mock-up will be similar to this 3D packaging mock-up.

High level thinking, package design that sells, with every aspect considered.

Our motto in everything, including packaging design, is “helping make the right choices.”

We design retail packages that sell to retail buyers and the intended consumer.

Unlike many others, the packaging we design is not about us winning design awards. Instead our reward and only objective is to dramatically increase your product sales via packaging design that is appropriate to your specific audience, and sells as a result.

Helping make the right choices includes what we help avoid, legal problems.

On top of great brand name design that buyers and consumers love, and of course packaging art that prints fabulously, we also consider the legal aspects of brand identity and packaging design that others very often overlook.

Truly professional in every way possible, the retail packaging and brand elements we design are loved by buyers, sell products to consumers, the art prints properly, and uncommon for most design firms, we pay very close attention to competing products to avoid claims of trademark and trade dress infringement by others.

In today’s global economy product packaging and branding elements must be unique and distinctive to stand out amongst competitors and avoid competitors claiming that your package’s trade dress is confusingly similar to their packaging and its trade dress.

Trade dress involves the colors, fonts, images, logos, and other elements that make a package either dissimilar or confusingly similar to the packaging design of others.

A successful claim of infringement involving trade dress can lead to you having to destroy all of your packaging, recall your packaged goods from store shelves, and even pay damages – while also having to reprint all of the packaging claimed to be infringing.

Often inexperienced designers are influenced by the design of other famous brand packaging, imitate its look and feel, and that imitation leads to claims of infringement.

Whether you are just starting out or in business for years, it is more important than ever before to be keenly aware of potential intellectual property problems with your brand name, your logo, and the design of your retail packaging.

Even if you have an intellectual property attorney you should realize few if any have a background in design, and in terms of trade dress, design is what enables great success yet also can cause major problems.

We are one of very few retail packaging design firms in the world that goes to such lengths to create retail packaging that sells and is unique and distinctive from a marketing as well as an intellectual property and legal point of view.
